You Might Be Exercising for the Wrong Reason

You might be exercising for the wrong reason. If you are exercising just to lose weight, it might be for the wrong reason. A lot of people start of the New Year saying they are going to join a gym and lose X number of pounds. Really, does that ever work?  I gave up thinking exercise was for just losing weight many, many moons ago and here is what changed.

I Used It As “MY” time

I changed the way I thought about exercise. Instead of something I had to do. I made it something I wanted to do. I made it “MY” time. We all need to take time for ourselves. Exercise is my time. It’s something I look forward to every day.  As busy adult women, we need to carve out time from making dinner, doing laundry, working, chauffeuring the kids around, etc. and free your mind, body, and soul!

I Connected and Listened to My Body

I stopped obsessing about losing weight and forcing myself to do exercises that I thought would get rid of those extra pounds even though I hated the exercise. Instead, I connected with myself and started doing exercise that felt good. And guess what? Because it felt good I would exercise longer or more frequently. The other change I noticed is that I started eating better because it felt good too. I found myself craving foods that were fresh and full of flavor versus all that processed food out there. It’s all connected!

I Felt Better About Myself

Need a confidence boost? Start exercising. There are so many benefits to an exercise routine. It makes you stronger. It clears your mind. It reduces stress. It helps you sleep better. It gives you a sense of accomplishment. It makes you smarter. It makes you feel and look better (I could go on and on).  These benefits will give you a big confidence boost!

Change Your Mind Set

Once I changed my mindset about exercise the pounds starting coming off.  So, the next time you start thinking about exercising and associating it with just losing weight. Try shifting your perspective.  Tell yourself “I am doing this to feel good” “I am doing this to be healthier” “I am doing this because I like the way it makes me feel.”

Think outside the box. It doesn’t have to be common exercises like running, kickboxing, etc. My neighbor rides horses; this is her passion. Her “ME” time. She finds the time to go because she wants to and it makes her feel good; it makes her happy.

I have another friend that likes to dance. I say if you like to dance, take a dance class or turn the music up at home and dance. Dance to multiple songs. Just find something that works for you. Find your passion!

There are seven weeks until Spring Break. Which means some of us will be traveling to warm weather and shedding those bulky winter coats. I am not going to worry about it. Instead of starting a “fad” diet to lose those extra pounds and feel like crap (don’t do it)! Make a healthier change. Love yourself enough to change your mindset.  Make a lifestyle change that will last beyond the seven weeks. I guarantee if you start connecting and listening to your body when you have to put on that bathing suit you will feel great about yourself!  Accept yourself for who you are because that is beautiful!
